Existing Stage 3 context and design brief

Healthy eating is important for children of all ages, particularly when growth and development is so rapid throughout childhood. Grains play an important part in a healthy diet. They are tasty, nutritious and easy to make into delicious meals and snacks.

We need your help to let kids know how important it is to eat grain-based foods, as part of a balanced diet.

Proposals are sought for a new advertising campaign to encourage young people to eat 4+ serves of grain-based foods per day.

Advertising brief: Your task is to design an advertising campaign, aimed at primary aged children, to promote at least 4+ serves of grain-based foods every day as part of a healthy diet.
There's a big gap here. It goes from healthy eating to an advertising campaign in one leap. There's a big gap between kids understanding healthy diets and developing the skills needed to create an advertising campaign. If the students do not really understand what a healthy diet is and how grains and legumes play a vital part of the healthy diet then how can they design an advertisement for it? Are we asking them to design superficial advertisements? In many ways, we are not modelling good teaching practice or an ethical approach to helping kids to develop healthy eating habits.

The NSW literacy continuum states that by the end of year 6, a student critically analyses a wide range of imaginative, informative and persuasive texts in different forms to compare how ideas are presented.

If we want to support them in achieving analytical skills, then we need to support them in developing a sound understanding of the subject matter, in this case, healthy eating, healthy diets and role of grains and legumes in this.

The campaign should include three forms of advertising*. A prototype of one piece of advertising will be produced.
The advertising campaign will present key health messages in a form that will appeal to primary students.

Successful campaigns will be ‘pitched’ to the Go 4 Grains client at the Celebration Event.
*Examples of different forms of advertising include: websites, posters, billboards, characters/mascots, radio/audio advertisements, merchandising, video/TV advertisements, stickers, flyers and online advertisements.
